Have you ever watched the movie Sliding Doors? I feel that was my day yesterday...
I went to my hair salon for my appointment as it was time for a trim and color. I had almost called before going because my appointment was at 12:30 and cut into Zach's swimming lessons and it's hard to bring two kids to a lesson. However Dave said he could bring both kids so I could get my hair cut. So I left and went to my hair appointment.
However, when I got there I discovered that Emily my stylist had apparently left a voicemail on our home voicemail asking me to reschedule because she had an opportunity to go to Las Vegas. I don't recall the message; but I have to admit we are horrible about checking our home voicemail messages. So I left the salon and walked to the craft bazaar at the end of the string of shoppes. It was new and it was CrAzY busy so I thought I would check it out quick-like before going home.
I found a pair of vintage skis with greenery that I thought would look nice on the ledge above our front door. I had been thinking of putting up a pine tree some skis and a sled up there for the holidays and I now have the skis all dressed up for the season and CHEAP! So I purchased the skis and ventured home.
When I arrived at home at 1:15 Dave and Zach were ready to go to swimming. While I stayed home with Elaina. She was still napping so I brought the skis in and got our ladder. I climbed up the ladder and got the skis up on the ledge above the front door. I had them propped up tall against the wall. I climbed down the ladder and checked it out. I didn't like the looks of just the skis if I didn't have anything else up there yet. So up the ladder I went again and rearranged the skis so they were laying length-wise across the ledge. Simple for now. I can add the tree and a little wooden sled after I find those items.
So I started climbing down the ladder.
I thought I had reached the bottom rung of the ladder so I stepped off.
I wasn't on the bottom rung. I was on the second to last rung on the ladder when I stepped off. I started to fall and not gracefully at all. I slid into the corner of the wall hitting the corner of the wall with my left arm, then when I tried to catch myself I slipped in my socks on the wood floor. My feet went up into the air and I fell onto the floor my left arm trying to stop my fall to the floor.
I must have laid on the floor for at least five minutes in shock of what just happened. My left arm hurt and stung and it hurt to move it at all. I slowly sat up and pulled my sweatshirt sleeve up my left arm. My left forearm was SWOLLEN and buldging outward.
Well crap! I think I broke my arm.
My first thought was - shouldn't this hurt more? My next thought was - Elaina's birthday party is a week from today? How am I going to get everything ready? CRAP!
So I texted Dave at Zach's swimming and told him to come home right after swimming and to not go to the library because I think I broke my arm.
Then Elaina woke up. I went upstairs and with one arm and hand got her out of her crib, changed her diaper and her clothes. Then I carried her downstairs, made her bottle and waited for Dave and Zach to come home while trying not to cry as I didn't want to scare Elaina.
Dave arrived home and we loaded up the kids and went to Woodwinds Emergency. I had Dave drop me off and he went home with the kids, per my direction.
I got in right away. Both the nurse and doctor who looked at my arm were pretty sure it was broken by just looking at the bulge that seemed to continue to grow out of my left forearm. So off I went for X-rays.
Shortly after returning from radiology my friend Nancy arrived to keep me company in the ER. She was there when the doctor and nurse arrived to give me the news that my arm is NOT broken but I have a severe muscle contusion with a hematoma. Yeah it's not broken! The nurse said she was really surprised that my arm was not broken. So was Nancy. My arm looks awful.
They wrapped my arm in an ace bandage and placed it in a sling. I'm supposed to rest it, ice it, compress it (ace bandage), and elevate it for the next 2-3 days. Which won't be too difficult to do because it HURTS!
It is supposed to hurt for the next week and will take a few weeks to heal completely as long as I don't over-do it. If the large hemotomia on my arm doesn't go down in the next several days I would need to return to the doctor for them to drain the fluid/blood from the injured area. (Let's hope it goes down on its' own!)
I realized after I was leaving the ER that I twisted my left knee in my fall as well. So I'll rest and put an ice pack on that as well. So I'm very sore and not moving so fast these days.
So as in the movie Sliding Doors if I had been able to get my hair cut (door 1) instead of walking down to the craft bazaar and finding the skis (door 2) this may have never happened! *giggle* Who knows...all I know is that Elaina's party menu is now changing greatly and everything will be out-sourced this time due to my arm. Well my hand too...my left arm and hand is swollen double its normal size. Everything is puffy.
Work is going to be a 'joy' this week as well...oh well. I'll do what I'm able to do. It took me an hour to type this one handed.
